The Yips - Why Practicing (alone) Will Not Fix It

For those who suffer from the yips is a mental 'program' of doubt which runs through the subconscious mind, which becomes an automatic response (for these golfers) each time they walk on the green - which is why conscious practice simply does not fix it.

Most players who experience this simply practice harder and harder only to find that it makes no difference to the problem whatsoever. Conscious practicing has no affect on the yips whatsoever as this is not where the problem lies. The changes must be made within the automatic processes of the subconscious - after which the problem often disappears as quickly and mysteriously as it came.

The yips is just like a computer program which runs each time you reach the green - and it becomes more firmly entrenched each time it occurs, making it even harder to overcome. This means that the longer a golfer has had the yips, the slightly longer it takes to remove, but don't worry, at the maximum a few months is all it usually takes to remove this terrible program once and for all.

So what's the best way to get rid of it? The easiest and most effective method I have found to helping (many) golfers overcome this affliction is by using a regular diet of visualization. Mentally rehearse those putts over and over again perfectly in your mind, for 5 to 10 minutes each and every day until the affliction is completely gone.

This 'de-programs' the yips and replaces it with a new, more positive program for your body to follow when on the green. Of course, there are some other techniques which work well to back this technique as well (such as a carefully chosen affirmation) but I will go into some of these techniques in more detail later.

Of course, there are some important components to making visualization work correctly as well, and so I will go into more detail about visualization in the very next tip, which you can find by clicking this link below: http://www.MindTrainingForGolf.com/golf_tips/golf_tip_3.php3

My main message to you today is that if you are experiencing the yips, don't worry, all is NOT lost, many people I have worked with have overcome the yips using this method. The power of your mind created the yips, and so it also has the power to reverse it quite easily.

"The Mind controls the body, and the mind is unlimited".

The best of success, Craig Townsend
